Solar power is the future and now that there is a solar plan this will cut flight prices in half. The plan named the Solar Impulse proves to the best way to harness the massive energy source of the Sun and prove to the world that the sun can power just about anything that require energy.
Just today the plane took off from Payerne, in the west Switzerland and will try to fly for 24 hours without having to stop. The plane has the weight of a family car but of course has the wingspan of a big airliner. It’s called a HB-SIA plane but is called The Solar Impulse for short. Even with the sun setting the suns rays should be able to keep the plane with enough energy to keep it going. The goal is the really find out whether or not the play can fly in darkness using the solar cells that rest upon it’s wings.
For seven years a team has been working passionately to achieve this very important first step of this huge project. The pilot Andre Borschberg will take the aircraft to an altitude of 27,900 ft (8,500 m ) later today, after the sun’s heat filled rays stop being strong enough to supple the planes solar cells with the normal need energy. After which the test plane will then start a slow descent down using the stored energy inside it’s batteries until sunrise of the following day.
The question is whether the experience pilot can make efficient and smart use of the battery energy to fly all through the night reported the team who have been working on the plane. If this mission is successful it will be the longest and also the highest flight ever made by a solar plane in history. This is huge!
The plane has 12,000 solar cells all over it’s wings. Because it weighs so light the it can hold so many solar cells without changing the weight of it so much.
This flight could change the way people fly and I hope it works out and the pilot is able to have a successful test flight.
